What can I expect in my first therapy session?
In your first therapy session with Lisa, you can expect to meet with a compassionate, empathetic, and experienced therapist who will create a safe and supportive environment where you can share your thoughts and emotions. Lisa will work with you to identify your goals for therapy and develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs and concerns. You will have the opportunity to explore your thoughts and feelings, gain insight into your behavior patterns, and learn mindfulness and evidenced-based techniques such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help you manage overthinking stress, worry, anxiety, depression, and self-esteem issues. Lisa will also answer any questions about the therapy process and provide guidance and support as you begin your journey toward healing and growth.
How often should I attend therapy?
The frequency of therapy sessions will depend on your individual needs and goals. Many clients attend therapy once a week, while others may attend less frequently. I will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan.
If you are thinking: "I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?"
Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, I’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
While sharing your thoughts and feelings with a best friend or family member can be incredibly supportive and valuable, there are several key differences when it comes to speaking with a trained professional like me:
1. Objectivity: I offer an unbiased perspective. While friends and family have their own emotions and experiences, I approach your situation without personal involvement, allowing us to navigate your concerns with clarity and objectivity.
2. Professional Training: As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), I have specialized training in understanding mental health, emotional challenges, and therapeutic techniques. This knowledge equips me to provide you with evidence-based strategies tailored to your unique needs.
3. Confidentiality: In our sessions, confidentiality is paramount. You can feel safe sharing sensitive information with the assurance that it remains private, fostering an environment where you can speak freely without fear of judgment or reprecussions.
4. Structured Support: Our sessions are designed to guide you through your challenges methodically. I provide frameworks and techniques - such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and mindfulness practices - that can help you overcome obstacles and reach your personal goals.
5. Focus on Personal Growth: The therapeutic process is centered around your growth and healing. I will listen and help you identify patterns, set goals, and work toward meaningful life changes.
6. Navigating Difficult Topics: Conversations with friends and family can sometimes be limited by concerns about how they react. With Lisa, you have a space to address topics that might be difficult to discuss with loved ones, empowering you to tackle challenges head-on.
Why can't I just take medication?
Medication can be effective, but it alone cannot solve all the issues. Sometimes, medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on the strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, my therapeutic approach will be different for each individual.
How long will it take?
Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQ page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique, and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success.
In summary, while friends and family are invaluable networks of support, working with a therapist provides you with a unique combination of professional insight, structured support, and confidentiality that can significantly enhance your journey toward emotional well-being and personal growth.
