When Your Mind Starts Keeping Score
Rumination: When Your Mind Starts Keeping Score
Monday's worries are usually about what's ahead. By the middle of the week, rumination often shifts toward measuring ourselves.
We start asking questions like:
Am I doing enough?
Why am I so tired already?
How is it only Wednesday?
Without realizing it, we begin keeping score. We tally unfinished tasks, missed workouts, unanswered emails, and all the ways we think we're falling short.
What we rarely count are the difficult conversations we handled, the responsibilities we met, the moments we showed up despite feeling exhausted, or the small wins that quietly moved us forward.
Rumination has a way of narrowing our attention. It convinces us that what remains undone is more important than everything we've already accomplished.
The problem is that self-criticism rarely improves performance. More often, it drains the energy we need to keep going.
So if you find yourself mentally reviewing the week and feeling inadequate, pause for a moment.
Ask yourself:
If a friend had my exact week, would I judge them this harshly?
The answer is usually no.
Maybe this week doesn't require more pressure. Maybe it requires a little more compassion.
You don't have to earn the right to be kind to yourself.
Especially on a Wednesday.
